Yes, Australia and Papua New Guinea are home to several species of amazing tree climbing kangaroos, like Dave, our beautiful Lumholtz’s tree kangaroo.
This species occurs only in a small area of highland rainforest in tropical north Queensland, mostly on the Atherton Tablelands.
Unfortunately, their survival is threatened by land clearing, which fragments their habitat. Travelling between patches of rainforest has resulted in high mortality from being hit by cars or attacked by dogs.
Dave is a rescue animal; he’d been hit by a car and was nursed back to health but could not be released back into the wild. We are fortunate to have him here with us as an ambassador for conservation of threatened species worldwide.
Be sure to visit him in his enclosure just past the freshwater crocs.
You may have to look high in the trees to spot him!
